Uri road closed after rains, locals seek immediate restoration

The residents of this border town in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Tuesday demanded the restoration of Lagama-Garkote road which was closed for the vehicular traffic late Monday night due to landslides and shooting stones triggered by heavy rains.

“The road was closed after rains lashed the area last night and is yet to be thrown open. The debris is lying at multiple spots on the stretch, leading to its closure,” said a local.

Another local said that heavy vehicles carrying the essential items to the village were facing a tough time to cross the slide hit area. “It is not for the first time that the authorities are showing ‘callous approach’ in restoring the road,” he said, adding: “We demand its immediate restoration”.

Locals of Sukhdar village also complained that they were facing a number of hardships due to the dilapidated road condition. “This road has not been macadamized till date and the vehicles usually get stuck in the mud during rains,” said a local.

Imtiyaz Wani, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) PMGSY Uri said that he will look into the matter.
