Woman among 4 injured in Sopore clashes

Four persons, including a woman were injured after clashes erupted when two youth were arrested during a cordon-and-search-operation on the outskirts of Sopore town on Tuesday.

A police official said that 22 RR, Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police and the CRPF launched a joint operation in Brath village following inputs about presence of some militants.

He said that the searches were on for several hours, however, nothing was found. Few gunshots were also heard during the searches, but it was not immediately known who fired the shots, he said.

However, a police official later said that the search parties could have fired some speculative shots.

Witnesses said that the situation turned ugly after the forces detained two locals – Khurshid Ahmed Mir, son of Abdul Rashid Mir and Mehraj Ahmed, both residents of Brath Kalan – during the search operation.

Youth took to streets and pelted the forces with stones to protest against the detention of the duo. Forces, according to an eye witness, responded with tear gas and pellets, leaving four youth including one lady. He said the injured were shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
