In a statement here Wangyal said that he informed the minister about the possibility of the outbreak of Locust plagues in Zanskar Sub-Division as this type of desert locust plagues occurred in the year 2007 which damaged the standing crops of the region and severely affected the local economy.
He said he informed the minister that the then government had to sanction special relief package to buy food and fodder which had immensely affected the state exchequer. Last year also the traces of the disease were noticed in the ploughing season. "We requested the minister to look into the matter personally and depute a team of experts to control the outbreak of the locust plagues at the earliest, If it is not controlled in time it may create a famine like situation," he added.
We also requested the Minister to set up Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) at Zanskar as it was a long pending demand and need of the people of Zanskar. But unfortunately Zanskar was not included in the approved list of KVKs during the 12th five year Plan.
The minister patiently noted all the points and assured to send a team of expert at the earliest to avoid the outbreak of Locust plagues in Zanskar and told us that possibilities of setting up a KVK at Zanskar would be explored.
