"Ashura symbolizes the struggle against cruelty, injustice and oppression of Yazeed. Imam Hussain (RA) achieved martyrdom because of his devotion to the eternal truth," they said.

"Yoom-e-Ashura is a day of mourning and remembering the greatest sacrifice of Imam Husain to safeguard the religion of Islam and Islamic principles from Yazeed who wanted to destroy it," leaders said.

However Muslim coordination committee Leh castigated the district administration for not declaring holiday on the eve of Muharram. It urged traders to observe a shutdown on Sep 22, opening day of Ladakh festival, to express resentment against the administration for not declaring the holiday.
