Srinagar, Dec 9: Eighteen persons, including eight cops, were injured when police fired tear smoke shells to disperse hundreds of people protesting against of disruption in power supply for the past one week.
Reports said hundreds of people from Kakapora, Paho, Sambora, Lelhar, Banderpora, Alachi Bagh, Kadrumou, Kandizal and Hanjipora villages came out on streets in the morning to protest disruption of power supply for the past seven days.
The protesters, who were shouting slogans against the government, blocked the road disrupting traffic. They said that for the past one week the villages were in complete darkness and the concerned department has not taken any cognizance of it.
Police reached on the spot asking the protesters to disperse. But the protesters said that the concerned officials should visit the spot and assure them electricity will be resorted to the areas.
The agitators resorted to stone pelting, forcing police to resort to lathicharge and fire tear smoke shells.
However, a police spokesman said the cops used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters.
Police said no one was injured in the stone pelting and subsequent tear smoke shelling.
