SRINAGAR, NOV 9: Police on Sunday said it killed two militants of Harkatul- Jihadi- Islami in south Kashmir's Islamabad district, while unknown persons lobbed a grenade towards the house of National Conference candidate at Sopur in north Kashmir.
A police spokesman said the joint party of policemen and troopers of 36 Rashtriya Riffles cordoned off the Ichloo Ahlan Vilalge near Kokernag this morning and launched searches. "Militants present there opened fire on the troops which was retaliated triggering an encounter," the spokesman said.
He claimed that two militants were killed in the ensuing gunfight. He identified one of the slain militants as Muhammad Rafiq alias Irfan son of Kasim Kohli of Kalamsoi, Singpor Kishtwar.
A defence spokesman in a statement here claimed that Irfan was involved in the killing of five GREF Beacon project personnel, including Lt Col Ajay Verma in June 2008.
A local news agency KNS said that unknown persons hurled a grenade towards the house of the NC candidate at Sopur in north Kashmir last night. However, no one was injured in the attack.
A police official said that sleuths of bomb disposal squad destroyed a live grenade at Cheki Achabal in south Kashmir on Sunday. "The grenade destruction did not cause any harm. Cheki Achabal is adjacent to 21 field ammunition depot at Khundru where a fire incident on August 7, 2007 triggered off a series of blasts which scattered live shells far and wide," the official added.
