Kangan/Srinagar, Oct 9: Police on Sunday said that two militants were killed in a gunfight in Kangan area of north Kashmir's Ganderbal district.
"Joint party of police and soldiers of 24-Rashtriya Rifles cordoned off Herpora village in Kangan area, 58 kms from here, this morning and launched searches. Militants holed up inside the house of Muhammad Subhan Mir resorted to indiscriminate firing and tried to break the cordon. However, the fire was retaliated, triggering a gunfight," Superintendent of Police, Ganderbal, Shahid Mehraj told Greater Kashmir.
"Both militants weren't speaking Urdu. They were speaking some different language and both were Afghanis," the SP said.
He identified the slain militants as Obaid and Tallah.
"We took every possible measure to save the property and life of civilians. However, one house in which militants were present got destroyed during the gunfight. There was no way for Fire Services team to douse the flames as the area is hilly without any motorable passage," he added.
Meanwhile, Army's Srinagar-based spokesman said that only one body had been retrieved in a charred condition. "He is believed to be a foreign militant," the spokesman said.
Sources said that some militants of the group broke the cordon and succeeded in escaping from the spot.
