Srinagar, Nov 9: Higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley Thursday received snowfall while parts of the region recorded light to moderate rains, a MeT official said here.
Higher mountainous reaches of the Kashmir valley, including those surrounding the Gulmarg resort, have experienced snowfall, he said.
Light to moderate rainfall was received in most parts of the Kashmir Valley with north Kashmir's Kupwara town recording the maximum 19.2 mm rainfall, he said. The ski resort of
Gulmarg, in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, which continues to freeze under sub-zero temperatures, received 4.6 mm rainfall, the MeT official said.
The minimum temperature in Gulmarg was recorded at minus 2.3 degrees Celsius.
Srinagar received 1.1 mm rainfall and the tourist resort of Pahalgam received 1.6 mm rainfall, he added.
Kashmir witnesses four months of chilling winter season, beginning November with day temperatures frequently slipping below the freezing point.
SRINAGAR-LEH HIGHWAY CLOSED
The Srinagar-Leh highway has been closed for traffic due to fresh snowfall at Zojjila and adjacent areas.
According to police sources light snowfall was on in Drass and adjacent areas, till late in the evening, due to which the road is closed till further orders.
Meanwhile, Minister for CA&PD and Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon said that the road will remain open on 15th of November officially subject to weather condition.
The Kargil-Zanskar road will also remain closed till further orders due to snowfall at Rangdum and Penzilla, police sources said.
