Srinagar, Nov 9: Chairman of Hurriyat (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday welcomed the announcement of elections in Pakistan.
"Hurriyat welcomes the announcement of the Pakistan President General Parvez Musharraf to hold polls there in February next year," Mirwaiz said while addressing a Friday congregation at historic Jamia Masjid.
Hoping that political uncertainty will end in Pakistan soon, the Hurriyat chairman said, "Holding of elections will strengthen the political institutions in Pakistan and will help in ending prevailing uncertainty."
Mirwaiz said that the political stability in Pakistan would not only have positive impact on its relations with India but the overall situation in the entire South Asian region.
While referring to "growing human rights violations" in the state, Mirwaiz said, "Troops have unleashed reign of terror in the state and during encounters with militants, troops target people and their houses. Targeting innocents is a glaring instance of state sponsored terrorism and we condemn it."
