Srinagar, Oct 9: Police dispersed a pro-Afzal Guru procession staged by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front at Dalgate here on Monday.
Dozens of JKLF activists led by the party vice-president Advocate Bashir Ahmad Bhat assembled at Shaheed Mazar and took out a procession demanding revocation of Guru's death sentence.
"Indians are protesting against hanging of Sarbjeet Singh but are insisting on hanging of Afzal Guru. It is a shame for them, We want his release," they shouted.
Shouting pro-freedom and pro-Afzal slogans, they marched through Dalgate market. However police reached there and tried disperse the protesters. The shopkeepers downed their shutters and joined the protests.
The protesters managed to reach main road where they sat on a dharna, blocking vehicular movement. Police swung into action and arrested Advocate Bashir Ahmad Bhat, Noor Muhammad Kalwal, Sheikh Abdur Rashid and other senior JKLF leaders. Police later used mild lathicharge to disperse the protesters.
