Varmul, Nov 9: Four persons were injured when a gang of smugglers attacked them at Varmul in north Kashmir on Saturday, a local news agency PBI, reported on Sunday.
It said the personnel of Forest Protection Force (FPF) seized 50 square feet of illicit timber from the smugglers in Hajibal forests last evening and kept it in the courtyard of Abdul Rashid Shah for the night.
The PBI said after the FPF personnel left the place the smugglers descended on the village and tried to take away the seized timber. Shah tried to stop them but the smugglers thrashed him severely.
When a forest guard Firdous Ahmad Dar came to the rescue of Shah, he too received punches in the facewhich left him bleeding profusely.
Muhammad Hussain Bhat and Tariq Ahmad Bhat of Hajibal also were injured as they tried to stop the assailants from beating Shah and Dar, the news agency said, adding, that the injured were rushed to Sheeri hospital where from they were referred to Varmul.
Police have registered a case in this regard under FIR No. 34/2008 in Police Station Sheeri and have launched a manhunt to nab the accused.
