Kupwara, Nov 9: An Army soldier was caught red handed by residents on Friday evening when he was trying to set ablaze a cow shed at Gagal Lolab in this frontier district.
Eyewitnesses told Greater Kashmir that the residents of Mukdam mohalla Gujjar Patti nabbed the soldier Bhoop Singh of 18 Rashtriya Rifles near the cowshed before he could set it ablaze.
As the news about the incident spread in the area, thousands of people from Gagal and other adjoining villages assembled on Kupwara-Lolab road and staged a protest against the authorities.
"Forests fires have made our lives miserable and have added to the sense of insecurity prevailing here," the protesters said, "Police and administration failing to nab the culprits has made us more vulnerable."
The protesters staged a sit-in and refused to hand over the accused soldier to the police.
Later police officials reached the spot and tried to pacify the protesters. However, protesters didn't relent and refused to handover the soldier.
When contacted Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sogam S Salaria told Greater Kashmir late in the night that, "We are trying to pacify the mob."
When this report was filed people had not handed over the accused soldier to police and protests were going on.
