Bandipora, Jan 14: Even though the government was taking several measures to restore the pristine glory of Asia's largest fresh water Lake Wullar, the Municipal Committee here has been allegedly dumping garbage in it for the last three years.
"Everyday tones of waste and garbage are dumped by the civic body in Zalawan area of lake and it has been virtually turned into a garbage dumping site," the residents told Greater Kashmir.
According to them, the accumulation of garbage was emanating foul smell and causing hardships to the people.
"It is unfortunate that rather than preserving the lake, the government is polluting it and if they are sincere, they should make alternate arrangements for dumping of waste," Fayaz Ahmed said.
When contacted, the additional deputy commissioner Bandipora, Peerzada Mushtaq Ahmed said the administration would look into the matter. "We are committed to restore the glory of lake," he added.
