Northern Command to observe Army Day

Srinagar, Jan 11: Army units across the northern Command are celebrating Army Day which is observed on January 15 every year.
“The event is of great significance and is observed to commemorate the assumption of appointment of Lt Gen (later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in 1949,” a defence spokesman said here today.
He said Army has always played a pivotal role in nation-building while displaying exemplary professionalism, commitment and bravery not only in defending the nation but in all tasks entrusted to it.
The spokesman said Army Day is being celebrated across northern Command with a theme, “Indian Army: Friend of the People – In War & Peace”.
 Reiterating Army’s commitment towards people, the spokesman said, a large number of medical and veterinary camps are being organised at various locations.
“On this day, a large number of functions will also be organised for the servicemen, veterans and the people. The Army Day functions have always generated keen interest in the people and been marked by active participation from all, especially the students and youth of the state,” he said.
