‘30500 women SHGs working in J&K under UMEED’

More than 30,500 women self help groups (SHGs) have been formed in Jammu and Kashmir under UMEED programme of National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM).

According to an official spokesperson, Director J&K State Rural Livelihood Mission, Abdul Rashid War said this during a workshop organised over financial literacy.

   

He said the UMEED under NRLM focuses on women empowerment through various programmes including financial inclusion and sustainable livelihoods.

Addressing the gathering, the director said that financial schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jan DhanYojana (PMJDY), Pradhan MantriJeevanJyotiBimaYojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan MantriSurakshaBimaYojana (PMSBY), Atal Pension Yojana (APY), Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency (MUDRA) are targeted towards poor sections of the society and it is important to create awareness among SHGs about these schemes so that they could deliver better at grassroots level.

He also said that same kind of workshop would be organised in Jammu division also to sensitize the RSETIs, financial literacy counsellors and lead district managers of banks who would act as master trainers for their respective districts for further training to financial literacy counsellors resource persons. He further said the purpose of providing financial education amongst poor community is to make them aware to avail benefits of the developmental schemes.    

He added that the financial literacy is one of the important strategies to keep SHGs’ and households’ aware about relevant financial services and to build their utilization capacity at the same time.
