The 39th GST Council Meeting was today held at New Delhi under the Chairmanship of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The Union Territory of J&K was represented by Advisor to Lt Governor K K Sharma.
TheAdvisor put forth the views of UT Government on various agenda items discussedduring the meeting. Sharma raised theissue of difficulty, faced by the tax-payers post-August 2019 for filing theirreturns in view of the connectivity issues. The council was apprised that alarge number of tax payers could not file their returns even after theconnectivity has been restored as the default by non-filing of returns hasresulted in the imposition of late fee payment.
The council accordingly decided to extend the date of filingof returns pending from August 2019 to March 24th, 2020.
This measure will give relief to a large number of TaxPayers who could not file their returns post August 2019 and thus will enhancethe compliance level for filing returns in the Union Territory of J&K.
