ATOAK, JKSMA welcome Farooq Abdullah’s Parliament statement about Sonamarg

In a joint statement, the adventure tour bodies said it is for the first time that any MP has debated on the potential of adventure tourism in Kashmir.

Adventure Tour Operators Association of Kashmir (ATOAK) and J&K Ski and Mountaineering Association (JKSMA) have welcomed the statement given by the NC president and Srinagar MP Farooq Abdullah in the parliament regarding possibilities of adventure sports at famous hill station Sonamarg. 

In a joint statement, the adventure tour bodies said it is for the first time that any MP has debated on the potential of adventure tourism in Kashmir. 

According to the statement, president ATOAK Rauf Tramboo said that before the independence the Royal Air Force had set up an adventure institute in Sonamarg and British officers were trained mountain climbing there. He further said that the snow remains in good condition for longer period and it has challenging rock faces and cliffs for rock climbing sport. 

While, the president JKSMA Mohammad Yusuf informed that in order to promote winter sports in Sonamarg, adventure tour operators and mountaineers conducted snow festivals a number of times but the government did not supplement and support the efforts and the destination remained ignored so far.
