Contractors protest, lock try Baramulla for 1 hour

The protesting candidates alleged that some of the contractors were being accommodated by the treasury authorities. The charge was however strongly refuted by the officials.

Scores of R&B contractors held protest demonstrations here today demanding clearance of their pending bills.

The agitating contractors locked the treasury office Baramulla for around one hour. Later the office was opened on the intervention of the district officials.

"We are suffering for want of money. Our families are at the verge of starvation and yet the authorities are paying no heed to our persistent pleas for clearance of bills,” they said.

“If the payment is not released forthwith, we will be left with no option but self-immolation,” Mehraj-U-Din, an agitated contractor said.

The protesting candidates alleged that some of the contractors were being accommodated by the treasury authorities. The charge was however strongly refuted by the officials.

"The payments are being released as per the priority fixed by the government. As per the orders we give preference to bills pertaining to flood-related works. We have cleared those bills and subsequently we will be releasing payment to the contractors," Treasury Officer Baramulla said.

A group of contractors later met the Deputy Commissioner Baramulla Talat Parvez and appraised him about the hardships being faced by them.

Parvez told Greater Kashmir that the issue has been taken up with the higher authorities and assured that the grievances of the contractors will be addressed soon.
