Authorities for the first time have decided to keep Sonamarg tourist resort open for the visitors in the winters.

The road leading to Sonamarg, which was closed few days back to snow fall in the area, has been reopened and authorities have decided to allow tourists to visit the resort as along as weather permits. Previously, it was a practice that government would close Sonamarg in after the snow and will allow tourists only in the spring then.

Chief Executive Officer, Sonamarg Development Authority  (SDA), Shabir Ahmed Raina told Greater Kashmir that the road leading to sonamarg has been opened for visitors.

"We had a meeting with the police and Beacon officials and after assessing the conditions it was decided that the road will be thrown open for tourists , however it will be subjected to fair weather only," the CEO said.

He further said that in view of the prediction or snowfall this week we urged the beacon authorities to press their men and machinery into work so that the road is cleared.

CEO said that it is for the first time the Sonamarg resort will be open for visitors after snowfall in winters.

We want to boost tourism here and it is a step towards that to make sure that the resort is open for visitors as much as possible.

SHO police station Sonamarg Mir Afaq said that they are coordinating with the SDA to ensure the road is kept open for the tourists who want to visit the Sonamarg resort in winters.

However he said that the road opening is subjected to fair weather, adding that as after snowfall there are chances of avalanches enroute and to avoid any untoward incident there will be a proper assessment before allowing visitors to resort.

Meanwhile the people associated with the tourism trade including ponywalas,  sledge riders, shopkeepers and other expressed happiness over the road opening.

"We are happy the road to Sonamarg is opened, it will boost the tourism here and will help us to earn our livelihood" they said.
