Hi-speed internet connectivity to Panchayats: Advisor Skandan chairs meet

Advisor to Governor, K Skandan Monday chaired the concluding session of a workshop here to discuss recommendations over the implementation of hi-speed internet connectivity to Gram Panchayats in the state.

While chairing the valedictory session of the two-dayworkshop on ‘Extension of Broadband and Internet Connectivity to all GramPanchayats’ of the state under BharatNet here, the Advisor suggested a hybridmodel having both constituents of Bandwidth hiring (OPEX Model) and FiberLaying and Owning (CAPEX Model).

   

He said that J&K for being a strategic state can startwith the service delivery and move on to the infrastructure thing and then moveon the model of owning the infrastructure and subsequently it would bebeneficial for the State in the long run.

The Advisor informed the workshop that the State Governmentwould send its proposal to Department of Telecommunications (DoT) at theearliest for approval.

He said the state will also take in consideration theexperiences from other states while finalizing the project for PanchayatInternet Connectivity.

Speaking on the occasion, Secretary DoT, Aruna Sundararajansaid the Government of India would support whatever model the state governmentchooses, adding the two options (OPEX and CAPEX) presented during apresentation were with a realistic estimation and also highlighted the pros andcons of the project.

“We are committed to fully supporting the Govt ofJ&K on whatever model they take. The State Govt will have to make thatevaluation, but in case of J&K, we are willing to support whatever is thebest in the interest of the state,” he said.
