JK students denied counter at Int'l Food Festival

Jawaharlal Nehru University organizes the festival every year and students from diverse cultures and nations display their cuisines.

The International Food Festival at JNU has turned sour for the Kashmiri students as they have been denied space due to threats allegedly issued by BJP student wing ABVP.

The booking for a Kashmiri food counter at International Food festival to be held at JNU, New Delhi, was cancelled by International Students Association (ISA), the body that organizes the event, after allegedly receiving threats from BJP’s student wing, ABVP.

Jawaharlal Nehru University organizes the festival every year and students from diverse cultures and nations display their cuisines.

“We booked a counter at the IFF and the festival organizers allotted us space for food counter along Tibet food counter. However, ISA started receiving threats from the ABVP goons and the students who organize the festival were threatened with legal action and deportation. The organizers received open warnings from ABVP threatening them to disrupt the festival in case Kashmiris were allowed to open their food counter which eventually resulted in cancellation of our booking,” a group of students from Kashmir said

“ISA approached the JNU administration but the university rector paid no heed to ISA’s complaints against ABVP,” they said, adding, “It is disheartening to see that groups like ABVP succeed in converting the liberal and free space of JNU into the communal space.”

“We hope that all student groups would come together and send a strong message to the administration and respond to the crisis by expressing their solidarity with JK students,” they said.
