LMD settles consumer complaint, fines dealer for violating norms

Legal Metrology Department has fined a dealer, importer of a water sipper bottle, Rs 15,000 for making inadequate declaration of date and place of the imported item.

According to a statement, a consumer purchased an insulatedwater sipper bottle from the departmental store located in the Residency Roadarea of Srinagar city with the assurance that the said bottle shall keep thewater warm for a period of 8-10 hours.

   

However, the consumer complained that the said bottle didnot work as promised. He approached the management of the departmental store forrefund of the amount or replacement but was given a deaf ear, the statementsaid.

The consumer approached the LMD, which served a notice tothe manager of the departmental store and also scrutinized the product for themandatory labelling and it was found that the imported product was not carryingthe declaration of month and year of import and country of origin, it said.

 The matter was alsotaken up with the importer of the product for carrying false declaration ofinsulated bottle and a penal sum of Rs15,000 was slapped on the importer formaking inadequate declarations on the product. Moreover, the management ofdepartmental store took back the defective product and refunded the amount tothe consumer.
