Mirwaiz says jewellers' strike genuine, demands rollback of excise duty

“It is unfortunate that now our skilled people are being deprived of livelihood as unjustified tax duties are imposed on them,” said Mirwaiz while interacting with goldsmiths at Saraf Kadal in downtown Srinagar.

Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday put his weight behind the Kashmiri goldsmiths and demanded immediate rollback of the excise duty.

“It is unfortunate that now our skilled people are being deprived of livelihood as unjustified tax duties are imposed on them,” said Mirwaiz while interacting with goldsmiths at Saraf Kadal in downtown Srinagar.

He said the ongoing strike of goldsmiths was genuine and that the Government of India must roll back the tax duty.

Jewellers are holding a pan-India strike against the excise duty imposed in the Union Budget 2016-17 since past more than a month.
