The PaK refusal has disappointed intra-Kashmir traders. “We were hopeful to send fresh fruits through Poonch, but unfortunately PaK officials declined the offer from this side.
The PaK authorities Tuesday rejected the proposal of J&K government which had suggested diversion of trade conducted through Salamabad to Poonch-Rawalkote route.
The state government had urged the PaK authorities to allow the Salamabad traders to conduct their trade via Poonch route as the trade on Salamabad-Chakoti route has remained suspended for last five days after a Pak-based driver was arrested for carrying banned substance.
“PaK authorities refused to facilitate Salamabad traders to do business via Poonch route, as they (PaK) officials categorically informed us that they would allow only Poonch traders to conduct the trade through that route,” a senior official told Greater Kashmir.
“Currently only 25 trucks are allowed to export tradable items to PaK, but the state administration after the intervention by Governor N N Vohra had agreed to allow 100 trucks to be exported to other part. But they (Pak authorities) declined to allow more than 25 trucks,” he said.
The PaK refusal has disappointed intra-Kashmir traders. “We were hopeful to send fresh fruits through Poonch, but unfortunately PaK officials declined the offer from this side,” Secretary, Salamabad-Chakoti Traders Federation, Hilal Turki said.
“PaK rejection of the proposal would cost us crores of rupees as most of the traders had stocked fresh fruits to be exported to PaK. But the arrest of a Pak-based driver carrying narcotics substances played the spoil sport,” he said.
The cross-Loc which began in 2008, is being conducted via two routes in Jammu and Kashmir namely Salamabad in Uri and Chakan-da-Bagh in Poonch district. However, the trade has been suspended on Salamabad TFC following the seizure of the drug by the police.
To mention, the Governor J&K on Monday directed the Financial Commissioner, Industries and Commerce, Khurshid Ganai to ensure that traders don’t suffer. He was further directed to explore possibility of facilitating the trade by the traders who were doing their business through Salamabad-Chakoti route, via Poonch- Rawalkote route till the issue was resolved.
