PHD Chamber welcomes J&K’s new poultry policy

Kashmir chapter of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry has welcomed yet to be approved Poultry Policy 2018.

In a statement issued here, Kashmir chapter co-chairman of the chamber Baldev Singh Raina said the massive import of poultry to state is an unexplored market for the local entrepreneurs which the policy can help towards.

“The proposal of draft poultry policy of animal husbandry department will not only attract the local players to this untapped market but will also enlighten the unemployed youths of our state to get professionally engaged in this sector. Poultry is one of the fastest growing segments of livestock and contributes a major share in terms of protein supplementation, from eggs to meat,” Raina said.

He said the draft policy should have been put in public domain so that the stakeholders and entrepreneurs would have submitted the inputs regarding draft Policy.

“The suggestive measures of draft as has been reported through print media are impressive and are focused towards sustainable growth and development of Poultry sector of J&K. With demand for poultry increasing rapidly and massive import of poultry is imperative that this sector hold a huge potential in generation of direct and indirect employment through various activities of this sector,” Raina said.

Raina said that the PHD Chamber suggests that this draft policy should seek, in each district, poultry parks with government and private hatcheries and feed mills.

“The agriculture sector gets some direct and indirect subsidies for fertilizers, pesticides, electricity etc. Though the poultry sector is an integral part of agriculture, it faces restrictions on use of agricultural land, attracts higher electricity tariffs and sales tax than agriculture and is subjected to different land and labour laws. Like other industries, this sector does not get benefits such as tax holidays or incentives,” Raina said. He demanded that poultry sector must be treated at par with agriculture sector in terms of all the benefits accrued by the latter.
