A day after discussing power projects, the legislative council on Tuesday witnessed uproar and noisy scenes as mark of strong protest against chairman for not constituting House Committee on hydro power projects of Chenab valley.

As soon as the House met, members of opposition National Conference and Congress stood on seats and pressed for constituting House Committee on power projects to study the rehabilitation policy of government for affected people.

NC and Congress members, led by Kichloo and Congress MLC Ghulam Nabi Monga created ruckus by beating there tables. Soon the entire opposition stormed into the well of the House and resorted to anti-government and anti-chairman slogans. The opposition was pressing for constitution of a House Committee on the issue. Senior PDP leader and revenue minister, Abdul Rehman Veeri tried to pacify the opposition.

“Let’s first finish the question hour, after that you can raise your point,” Veeri told the agitating members.

However, Chairman Upper House, Haji Inayat Ali rejected the plea and went ahead for questions.

“We hold one and half hour discussion on this topic yesterday. Concerned minister responded to all points raised by members, no one demanded House Committee then, so why are they (Opposition) disturb the house today,” Chairman said while pointing towards opposition and asked members to resume question hour.

On this, NC and Congress member got agitated and went into the ‘Well’ close to the chair of Chairman, pressing for demand of setting up of House Committee. They also said that opposition was being ignored and attitude of the chairman was not fair.

There were some visible verbal exchange between Chairman and Sajjad Kichloo in which later alleged that Chairman, make the issue personal.

“There is no harm to anyone if you constitute house committee for power projects affected people,” Sajjad Kichloo, shouted pointing fingers towards chairman.

Appealing Chairman, Monga said, “Feel the sensitivity of the issue, large number of villages on verge of submerging, people don’t have homes, cutting across the party lines all legislators from Chenab seems equally concerned about the issue, it’s a fit case for having House Committee”.

Amid loud shouting and anti-chairman slogans opposition staged sit-in protest near the Well’ and later staged walkout from the house.

Then for the entire day the Opposition NC and Congress stayed away from the proceedings describing Chairman’s decision of not constituting House Committees as ‘biased and unjustified’.

Later, during discussion on Rural Development Department, BJP member Sofi Yusuf appealed Chairman to send some senior member to persuade opposition for attending house but Chairman refused to entertain the request.

“This house is not complete without opposition; please send someone to call them back,” Sofi Yousaf requested chairman.
