Man commits suicide by jumping into Chenab

A 35-year-old man allegedly committed suicide on Monday by jumping into river Chenab, police said.

Eyewitnesses said the man climbed railing of the of Ganpatbridge at Pul Doda on Batote-Kishtwar national highway and jumped into theriver.

   

He has been identified as Muhammad Rafiq, son of GhulamHassan, a resident of Sekwan village.

“It surfaced from the statements of the eyewitnessesthat the man jumped into the river. He was a farmer and daily wageworker,” said Munir Khan, SHO Doda.

An eyewitness has told the police that Rafiq was coming fromDoda city side on foot and suddenly stopped on the bridge, climbed the railingand jumped into the river.

“We are trying our best to fish out the body, but dueto very fast currents, it is difficult to locate the body immediately,”said Khan, adding investigation proceeding under section 174 will be initiatedonly after retrieving the body.

He said police will also record statements of the family.Preliminary Investigations have revealed that Rafiq was allegedly under stressover “a family dispute”, due to which he took the extreme step, theSHO said.
