Matta residents stage protest against water scarcity

The residents of Matta village in Kishtwar district Friday staged a demonstration against prevailing water scarcity in their area.

Raising slogans against the public health engineering (PHE)department, they accused the officers of “neglecting” the area. “Our taps havebeen running dry since the past several days, but the authorities continue tobe unmoved,” they alleged.

   

Reports said that scores of the residents, including men,women and children, gathered at Parade Ground Chowk and staged a sit-in forseveral hours. As a result, traffic also remained affected.

The residents demanded that the authorities must takemeasures to end the water shortage.

Later, an officer of the department, Abhay, reached the spotand tried to pacify the protesters. “He was allegedly heckled by one of theprotesters, who used force to deter him from discharging his duty,” stationhouse officer, Kishtwar, Bashir Ahmad, said.

He said that an FIR has been registered against one MadanLal for allegedly “using force to deter a public servant from discharging hisduty”.
