Protests in Banihal against thrashing of youth on highway

Inhabitants of Chareel in Banihal Monday protested against the alleged army highhandedness on Jammu Srinagar National Highway.

The army personnel Monday morning allegedly thrashed a localcar driver identified as Junaid while he was overtaking an army convoy vehicleen route Jammu from Srinagar.

   

“Army men stopped the car and started beating Junaid, soonafter the incident locals assembled and held massive protests,” a localresident said.

Men, women and children came on the highway and blocked thevehicular traffic by sitting on dharna.

They were raising slogans against harassment on the highway.The protestors alleged that the forces and army have unleashed “reign ofterror” on the highway. They complained that the ordeal started since civiliantraffic was banned by the government

The protestors alleged that army men are regularly harassingthe villagers and locals on the highway.

Police and civil officers rushed to the spot for pacifyingthe protestors.

The protestors impressed upon civil and police officers thatthey were compelled to come on the highway against the army highhandedness. Theofficials pacified the protestors and assured them they won’t be harassed infuture.

SSP Ramban Anita Sharma said a case under relevant sectionsof law stands registered at Police Station Banihal against army men who wereinvolved in beating Junaid.
