“State has failed to tap potential of adventure tourism in Kishtwar’

Successive state governments have failed to tap potential of adventure tourism in the beautiful Kishtwar district, as per local residents of the district.

The newly carved out district is geographically well connected with parts of Zanaskar-Kargil, Anantnag-Kashmir and Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. It is surrounded by the mighty Himalayas from all the sides. Kishtwar is also blessed with spectacular valleys like Marwah-Warwan valley, Paddar valley and Chhatroo and mighty Chenab River besides a number of natural streams and waterfalls and lush green forest cover. But local residents said the concerned authorities have failed to tap its tourism potential.

So far major chunk of tourists in Kishtwar come to visit the Ziarat Zain-Shah-Sahib, Farid-ud-Din Sahib, Hazrat Asrar-ud-Din Sahib, Athara Bhuja Devi temple, Chandi Mata temple Machail and Chitto Devi temple. “If professional guides and maps provide proper guidance to the visiting tourist, the district can attract many tourists,” said Lalit Shan, a resident of Atholi village near Gulabghar, Kishtwar.  “We have everything to attract tourism, but unfortunately government has failed to promote it on the state’s tourism map,” said Randeep Bhandari, a social worker from Kishtwar district. “If tourism department helps people to explore the virgin valleys in Kishtwar and provide basic infrastructure, the district would emerge as a major attraction for adventure tourism,” he said.
