Woman, newborn die at Doda district hospital

The family members of a woman staged a demonstration against hospital administration on Tuesday after she and her newborn baby died at the local district hospital on Tuesday.

Hailing from a far flung area of Doda district, Teshil Chiralla, the woman, identified as35-year-old Shaista Begum, was brought to the district hospital Doda to deliver a baby after she went in labour. “Shaista and the newborn baby died in the hospital due to medical negligence on part of the hospital administration,” the protesting family members alleged.

While talking to Greater Kashmir, the family members said, “We called the concerned doctor more than a couple of times, but no one showed up. As there is no gynaecologist posted in the hospital, nurses run the gynae ward themselves and even they did not cooperate with us. As a result, Shaista and the newborn baby died.”

The family members, accompanied by local residents, demanded an inquiry against the hospital staff and administration. “The hospital is in a dismal state. Medical facilities available here are way below standard. Whenever one asks for medicines, the staff asks us to buy them from a private shop. The administration should take note, initiate an inquiry and make sure that things are mended,” local residents told Greater Kashmir.

Meanwhile, after hearing about the incident, ACR Tariq Hussain Naik, Tehsildar Yonus Ahmed Zargar and ASP Vinay Kumar reached the spot and pacified the protesters. They assured that the incident will be investigated and the guilty, if any, will be dealt with strict action under law.

While talking to Greater Kashmir, an official said, “Two committees have been framed to conduct an in-depth inquiry and find out the cause of death of the woman and the newborn. DC Simrandeep Singh has also assured to initiate a magisterial inquiry into the incident.”
