Won’t allow division of J&K on regional, religious lines: NC

Claiming that divisive forces are making attempts to break the unity of the people in Jammu and Kashmir, the National Conference Wednesday vowed to foil such machinations by not allowing division of the state on regional and religious lines.

“We are the inheritors of great legacy of Sher-e-KashmirSheikh Mohammed Abdullah, who strived all his life to preserve distinct andunique identity of the state and its existence as a single entity,” NC GeneralSecretary Ali Mohammed Sagar said while addressing workers’ convention in Dodadistrict.

   

He said the proponents of trifurcation are destined to failbefore the strong resolve of the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.

Without naming anyone, Sagar, who is currently on a four-dayvisit to the Chenab Valley, lashed out “reactionary and communal forces” forpushing their sinister agenda by vitiating the atmosphere and creating a wedgebetween various segments of the society.

He hoped the people will give these forces a befittinglesson by maintaining their time-tested unity, harmony and tranquility.

“Whenever forces inimical to the unity of the state findthemselves in a political whirlpool, they resort to inciting passions by rakingup contentious issues,” Sagar said, referring to the attempts being perpetratedto weaken the state’s special status under Article 370.

“Being custodian of peoples’ interests, the NationalConference will foil these designs tooth and nail,” he said.

Additional General Secretary Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal exhortedpeople to “guard against polarising elements” and expressed concern over”orchestrated campaign launched by the reactionary forces to create politicalinstability” in the state.

Kamaal described the prevailing situation as detrimental todemocratic growth of the state, saying people’s will for restoration ofdemocracy cannot be throttled as per whims of New Delhi.

“Governor’s rule is no substitute to popularly-electedgovernment, as people are deprived accessibility to those governing them,” hesaid, seeking immediate restoration of democratic process.

Meanwhile, Provincial President Devender Singh Ranaemphasized on the need for strengthening regional unity by providing equalopportunism of progress to all. “National Conference is committed to assuagethe regional and sub-regional aspirations,” he said while referring to theassurances held out by the leadership with regard to consideration of regionalautonomy, if voted to power with absolute majority.

Senior party leader Khalid Najeeb Suharwardhy and party’sProvincial Youth President Ajaz Jan also spoke on the occasion.

Radiq Shah, Zaffarullah Rathore, Abdul Manan Banday, AzadHussain Reshi, Thakur Bachater Singh, Syed Naveed Hashmi, Abid Magry, MubarakAli, Ayaz Ahmed Sheikh, Mushtaq Ahmed and Choudhary Salam-ud-Din were alsopresent on the occasion.
