Worst traffic jam on Srinagar-Jammu highway

There were massive traffic jams at various places between Ramban and Banihal on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Thursday.

The passenger vehicles and load carriers carrying essential commodities for Srinagar, witnesses said, were moving at a snail’s pace.

Traffic jams on the highway between Banihal and Nashri have become a common feature, drivers and commuters complained.

The aggrieved drivers and commuters accused the traffic police of failing to regulate the traffic on the highway.

“The road expansion work between Banihal and Nashri is going on in an unplanned manner,” they said.

“The earth excavation on stretches between Nashri-Chanderkote, Chanderkote-Ramban, Ramban-Digdool and Magarkote-Banihal is being done in an unplanned manner; the debris at these places remains scattered along the sides of the road which leads to massive traffic jams,” the drivers said.

They said due to avoidable halts, the journey from Jammu to Srinagar takes more than 15 hours instead of six to seven hours.

The commuters alleged that there remains chaos and confusion on the highway “as no one from the traffic department or the police bother to implement order on the highway”.
