City areas, markets face worst water logging

Srinagar city was Saturday hit by worst water-logging due to incessant rains throwing the life in the summer capital out of gear.

It was difficult for the commuters to cross or walk on various city roads even the commercial hub Lal Chowk literally remain deluged.  

   

The busy Residency Road and MA Road witnessed massive water logging and it was not possible for the commuters to walk through.

At Regal Chowk, the pedestrians preferred to hire auto-rickshaw to cross the road.

Public transport also went off the roads due to water logging which hampered the smooth movement of traffic.

Shopkeepers at Regal Chowk and its adjacent areas complained that they had no business on Friday due to water-logging.

“Customers are not able to cross the road and to have some shopping due to water-logging. There is no business today. We are sitting idle,” said Shabir Ahmad, a salesman at Regal Chowk.

Massive water-logging was witnessed at Parraypora, Rambagh, LD Hospital, TRC Junction, Regal Chowk, Jehangir Chowk and Sonwar resulting in slowing down of traffic. 

Inhabitants of Hilalabad Arampora in Qamarwari and Nund Resh Colony in Bemina also complained that poor drainage system has compounded their problems. Similar complaints were received from Usmanabad lane 3 in Shalteng. The residents there demand that the government should construct the drain as the locals were facing tough time during rains. 

Bilal Ahmad, a resident of Chanapora said huge water-logging in the area was caused due to chocked drainage.

Inhabitants of Umerabad, Mustafabad in Zainakote, Maisuma, Indira Nagar, Iqbal Colony Sonwar, Aloocha Bagh, Shivpora, Rainawari, Soura also complained of severe water logging.

The choked drains, according to aggrieved locals of various localities, led to water logging, resulting in immense hardships to commuters and locals. This also hampers movement of pedestrians particularly children, women and aged.

Inhabitants of Indira Nagar said interior roads and bylanes are inundated in knee deep rain water.

“Students and patients are bearing brunt of water-logging. The Cantonment Board is in slumber. We hope district administration will intervene to ensure running of dewatering pumps,” said the aggrieved residents of Indira Nagar.

Inhabitants of Habba Kadal, Barbar Shah, Khanyar, Zainakadal, Noorbagh also complained of water-logging.  Most of the interior roads also remained water-logged, forcing inhabitants to stay inside.

Commissioner, Srinagar municipal corporation (SMC), Riyaz Ahmad Wani, said the SMC pressed men and machinery into service to undertake dewatering. “All the dewatering stations are functional,” he said. 

“I am myself at Regal Chowk and the process to dewater the road is going on,” he told Greater Kashmir over phone at 6:15 pm on Friday.
