Sand extractors stage demo

Greater Kashmir

“The Irrigation and Flood Control department is giving free hand to some blue eyed persons to use machines for extracting sand from river Jhelum despite ban on it,”

Scores of people working as sand extractors on Wednesday staged protest against the “wrong policies” of the authorities.

The sand extractors assembled at Press Enclave here and staged protest against the Irrigation Flood and Control department. “The Irrigation and Flood Control department is giving free hand to some blue eyed persons to use machines for extracting sand from river Jhelum despite ban on it,” said Abdul Gani Dar of Soiteng Lasjan, who was leading the protest.

He said that sand extractors in Kashmir collect sand at different locations including Lasjan, Athwajan, Zero bridge, and Samarbug. “The livelihood of around two lakh people is connected with this job. We will be forced to intensify our protest if authorities fail to prevent use of machines for sand extraction,” they said.
