The healthcare system is not confined to just the impressive infrastructure that we can see – buildings and the machines. It actually is about the services that are rendered through this infrastructure by the people who work in hospitals, run the machines.

In this working what is important is the efficiency and integrity of the people involved. Any shortcoming, or any absence on these counts tells upon the entire system. The importance of the healthcare is such that any slight degree of inefficiency can end up in worst results, causing loss of life.

That is why it is crucial that even a small discrepancy needs to be underlined, and brought to the notice of the people who are at the helm of affairs.

This, with the single aim of getting the things right and making the system run as it actually needs to run. In this regard the news that there is no mechanism to check pilferage of drugs, disposables in Kashmir hospitals is very disturbing. It is in a state of disbelief that a common person gets to know such a thing.

The case of Bandipora hospital supply theft is really a shocking expose. The supply of drugs and disposable items to various government hospitals is meant to reach those who are getting treated in these hospitals.

We all now that this is a public trust and it mainly benefits those who cannot afford private healthcare services. If this hospital supply is found draining into the commercial market, it is really scandalous.

It means a straight theft, and needs a stern action from the people who are in the positions of supervising the healthcare services. Digging more into this ugly thing it also comes to notice that it is not the first time that such a pilferage has been found.

Even before, there have been such cases. One would like to ask that what was done in the earlier cases of pilferage, and was any responsibility fixed. If not, then those who are at the top are equally responsible for this rot.
