Spring Time

This cyclic movement of time is such a wonderful thing. Asif yesterday people in Kashmir were freezing with cold, confined to theirhomes, and barely making the routine of life work. Roads closed, electricityabsent, supplies short, and an entire life under a sort of gloom – this was thelife of an ordinary Kashmiri. But today it’s completely changed.

The sun is out, it shines all over, electricity supply isbetter, provisions in the markets are abundant, children are out to theirschools, businesses are slowly limping forward – now everything points towardsa colorful and vibrant time.

That is why spring is a sign of life and the brilliance of life. One of the traditional symbols of spring in our city is the garden called Baadam Vaer, the Almonds Alcove.

Thanks to the efforts that restored this beautiful spot in the city, people are now enjoying good time in this beautifully laid out garden. It is good to see school children being taken for picnic to this garden that has a resonance with our tradition, and represents a nice memory of the olden times. Our elders tell us what it used to be and how it made a part of every household outing in the spring.

This garden is a partof folklore for the residents of Srinagar city. Though, as the elders tell, thearea of the present garden is no match to what it used to be, but even then itis such a breathtaking scenic spot. One can only hope that the J&K Bankthat gave it its present look would add new elements to the garden. But withthe caveat, that it doesn’t adversely impact its traditional and natural look.

One also hopes that during spring time there is anarrangement of public transport till late in the evening for the people toenjoy this scenic spot. In these distressing times and environs Baadam Vaerbrings smile to its visitors, little ones, youth, and the old.
