Friday Focus | Unbreakable Rope of Rescue

Allah (SwT) stretches the unbreakable rope of rescue for people struggling in deep waters, as the simile holds, so that they hold fast to it together and that adds to their chance of rescue, the Holy Verse holds the promise:

”And hold fast all together, by the Rope which Allah (stretches out for you) and be not divided among yourselves; and remember with gratitude Allah’s favour on you; for ye were enemies and He joined your hearts in love, so that by His Grace, ye become brethren; and ye were on the brink of Pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus doth Allah make His Signs clear to you: that ye may be guided” (4:103)

The reference in the Holy Verse is to the people of Yathrib, who were on the verge of being consumed by the blood feud raging between two tribes. The feud was being perpetually fuelled by Jewish tribes in the suburbs of Yathrib, so that they could enhance their economic stranglehold. The subversive strategy worked until people of Yathrib approached Holy Prophet (pbuh) and appealed to him to visit their city, so as to settle terms of peace.

As Providence would have it, their hearts were joined in love, and by Allah (SwT)’s Grace they became brothers, as they held together strongly to the rope that Allah (SwT) had stretched for them. The blood feud ended as Yathrib became Madinat-ul-Nabi (pbuh) the city of Prophet (A.S). The city became the epicentre of emerging Islamic republic. Allah (SwT)’s promise holds, as He makes His signs clear for providing guidance to the people in need of it.

Yathrib becoming Madinat-ul-Nabi (pbuh) remains a marvel of history, symbolizing Divine Guidance for people torn by conflict, who combined to write a golden chapter of history.
