16 new positive cases in J&K, total 125

The toll of COVID19 positive cases in J&K has jumped to 125 with 16 new cases detected on Tuesday. Three of the cases had reported no travel history or contact with a COVID19 positive person.

Ten new cases of COVID19 were reported from Kashmir today,while six samples tested positive in Jammu division.

   

Dr Farooq Jan, medical superintendent SKIMS, said five sampleshad tested positive at SKIMS. While giving details, he said two of the patientsare from Bandipora. A 23 year old male from this highly affected district hadno travel history or contact with a COVID19 positive person, while a man in 58,who also tested positive had recently travelled from Maharashtra.

In addition, two samples taken from patients admitted atGovernment Medical College Baramulla have also been found positive. Dr Jan saidone of the patients is a 35 year old male from Tangmarg with history of contactwith an infected person. The other is a female aged 50 from Sopore. Inaddition, a 70 year old female with no reported contact or travel history fromGanderbal district has also been found positive. The patient is admitted inGanderbal, he said.

At Chest Diseases Hospital, five samples tested positivetoday. These include three samples taken from a family of a COVID19 positiveperson from Srinagar district. The samples that tested positive were of twosiblings and their cousin, Dr Naveed Nazir Shah, in-charge COVID19 response atCD Hospital said. The father of siblings had tested positive for COVID19 a fewdays ago.

In addition, samples of a female in 20s from Srinagar and aman from Bandipora who passed away at SMHS Hospital last evening have testedpositive for COVID19 today.

The young Srinagar woman, Dr S Saleem Khan, in-chargeCOVID19 response at Government Medical College(GMC) Srinagar said, had nohistory of travel or contact with a COVID19 positive person. “However, herfather had travelled from outside Kashmir a month ago,” he said.

Similarly, the Bandipora man who died at SMHS Hospital lastnight and the young man from this district who is admitted at GMC Baramullaalso had not reported any contact or travel history. The patients are among thefew cases that have tested positive in Kashmir but have no attributable sourceof the viral infection.

Prof Parvaiz Koul, head department of internal and pulmonarymedicine at SKIMS, said although there could be something that was not beingreported but termed the cases “worrisome”. He said the cases were suggestive of”limited community transmission”. “If such cases increase, we may have movedfrom local transmission to community transmission,” he said.

However, Dr Naveed Nazir Shah said it was a “bit early” tocomment on the chances of community transmission. “People often do not reporttheir entire travel and contact history,” he said.

In Jammu, six new cases of COVID19 were reported. Five ofthe patients were shifted from Sunjwan to CD Hospital Jammu for treatment.These five patients are not residents of J&K. While three of them havereported their residence as Uttar Pradesh, two are from Maharashtra. One casewho tested positive for COVID19 is admitted at Udhampur.
