2 clerics among 8 detained in southern areas

Two clerics were among eight persons detained in fresh raids by the police in Pulwama and Shopian districts.

A source said the police raided the residences of Maulana Noor Ahmad Trali, chairman of Dar-ul-Uloom Noor-ul-Islam Tral and Ghulam Nabi Molvi, khateeb of jamia masjid DardsaraTral, during the night and detained them.

   

A complete shutdown was observed in Tral and its adjoining areas to protest the detentions. All shops and business establishments in the town remained closed while public transport was off the roads.

A protest rally was also taken out by local civil society organisations to denounce the detention of the clerics.

Amid protests and shutdown, minor clashes also took place in the town, with protesters pelting stones on vehicles of forces personnel.

The police also detained five persons during nocturnal raids in Shopian district, officials said.

The police raided Balpora, Wathoo and Poterwal villages and picked up Muhammad Asif Tak son of Muhammad Ashraf of Balpora; Naseer Ahmad Malik son of Ghulam Ahmad of Wathoo; Farooq Ahmad Bhat son of Wali Muhammad, Shabir Ahmad Tantray son of ShabanTantray and Muhammad Shafi Khan son of Ghulam Qadir Khan.

A senior official told Greater Kashmir that all the five persons were being quizzed for their alleged role in various stone-pelting incidents.

All the detainees were lodged in nearest police stations.
The district and tehsil offices of Jamaat in Pulwama, Shopian, Anantnag, Kulgam, Tral and Pampore areas were sealed last week.

In the past 10 days, the police have detained more than 400 Jamaat-e-Islami activists in the Valley—200 of them from southern areas along—before the government of India Thursday banned the socio-religious organisation for five years.

The district and tehsil offices of Jamaat in Pulwama, Shopian, Anantnag, Kulgam, Tral and Pampore areas were sealed last week.
