2 militants killed in Naugam sector: Army

Two militants were killed in an encounter in Naugam sector of north Kashmir, army said on Saturday.

“It was a clean operation in which two militants tried to infiltrate by cutting the anti-infiltration fence. However, the alert troops deployed on the Line of Control foiled their attempt and killed them instantly,” said Virendra Vats, Major General, GOC 19-infantry division Baramulla.

At a press briefing, he said the infiltration attempt followed similar such attempts made earlier in Kupwara and Rajouri sectors in recent past.

“This needs to be seen in the backdrop of various inputs about increased presence of militants on launch pads across the Line of Control, fully facilitated and supported by Pakistani army,” General Vats said.

“Around 300 militants are waiting to infiltrate from different launch pads from across the border. However, army is ready to foil any such attempt.”

He said that after abrogation of Article 370, Pakistan has been “desperately trying to instigate people of Kashmir.” “However, people have rejected the narrative of Pakistan,” he said. A senior security official said that one of the two slain militants, Idris Bhat, has been identified as a local. (With PTI inputs)
