20 years of Kargil war | President Kovind to join celebrations in Drass today

President Ram Nath Kovind will join the Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations here on Friday.

According to an official source, the President, Supreme Commander of the armed forces, will arrive in Drass town in the morning to join the “victory celebrations” which have been organised to commemorate 20th anniversary of the Kargil war.

“Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik, Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat, Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa and the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh will receive the President on his arrival,” the source added.

“It is for the first time in 20 years that any President would be participating in victory celebrations at Kargil war memorial in Drass. The three service chiefs are likely to brief the audience over complexities of the operation,” the source said.

He said a ‘Victory Flame’ lit by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on 14 July at the National War Memorial in Delhi will be received by the Army Chief in Drass on Friday. It will be merged with the eternal flame at the Kargil war memorial.

The Defence Minister had visited Drass earlier this week to pay tributes at Kargil war memorial.
