3 militants killed, Major, 2 cops injured in Baramulla gunfight

Three militants were killed while an army Major and two police personnel were injured in a day-long gunfight in Yadipora Pattan area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday, police said.

The injured Major has been identified as Rohit Mehra of 29 RR, while the injured policemen are Nasir Ahmad and Farooq Ahmad.

   

“All the three militants involved in the encounter have been killed. The operation concluded late evening,” said Abdul Qayoom, SSP Baramulla.

He said that based on information about the presence of militants in the area, army’s 29 RR, police and CRPF on Friday morning launched a cordon and search operation in Yadipora village of Pattan which is just 200 yards away from the army camp of 29 RR.

“While search operation was in progress, the hiding militants fired on the security forces in which a Major of 29 RR received a bullet in his jaw. He was immediately shifted to army’s 92 base hospital at Srinagar where his condition is stated to be stable. In the ensuing encounter three militants were killed,” he said. “Two cops of Jammu and Kashmir police also sustained injuries.”

Locals said that early morning on Friday the security forces cordoned the area and started a search operation. They said as the search operation was in progress, sudden exchange of firing started. “As firing stopped for some time, the local residents left their homes and took shelter in the nearby area,” said Naseer Ahmad, a local resident.

During the last two months, north Kashmir’s Baramulla district has witnessed three major encounters which left several militants and security personnel dead. On August 18, eight lives were consumed in a two-day long gunfight between militants and security forces. Among the eight deaths included three militants and five security forces personnel
