At least five employees of the Central Jail hospital Srinagar have tested positive for coronavirus.
"Five employees of the jail hospital have been found positive," senior jail officials told Greater Kashmir. "They are under quarantine and treatment."
Officials said that they have started immediate contact tracing and "other major steps are being taken to stop its further spread". They however said that so far no jail inmate has been found positive.
Jail officials said that over 500 intimates are presently lodged in Srinagar central jail.
The officials said that over 3500 people are lodged in different jails in J&K including 109 females.
Earlier, about a fortnight ago about 50 jail inmates and security forces personnel in Anantnag district of southern Kashmir had tested positive.
The families of jail inmates have demanded released of their loved ones on humanitarian basis.
Soon after the COVID outbreak, many prisoners were released either on bail or on the recommendations of a High Powered Committee constituted by the government for the purpose of recommending the eligible cases of the prisoners for their release amid covid-19.
