525 new cases, 9 deaths

As many as 525 people tested positive for COVID19 while ten people lost lives due to the viral infection in J&K on Tuesday. The death toll reached 729 while the tally of cases is 38223.

COVID19 cases continued to drop in Kashmir division on Tuesday, while Jammu division had another

   

day of high number of positive cases. 284 people tested positive in Kashmir today. Jammu’s positive cases were 241. On Monday too, 245 people from the division tested positive while Kashmir had 290 positives.

Dr Qazi Haroon, OSD to DHSK, said most of the new cases being detected through Rapid Antigen Tests in Kashmir are people who have been experiencing COVID19 symptoms. He said the tests have been able to detect thousands of cases of COVID19 in the past month and also reduced the load on the microbiology labs at SKIMS Soura, SKIMS Medical College Hospital and Chest Diseases Hospital.

On the other side, till date, 154 females and 262 males have expired due to COVID19 in Kashmir as per the data available with DHSK. 186 of these were aged less than 60 years of age.

416 people of the 637 deaths were having underlying diseases, the remaining 221 (34 percent) were otherwise healthy individuals, Dr Haroon said. He said the data was evidence that COVID19 was affecting and even fatal to all age groups and a significant number had no disease.

In the 24 hours preceding Tuesday evening, nine people lost life to COVID19, five of them in Kashmir division and four in Jammu division. The death toll of the pandemic reached 729.

All the deceased in Kashmir division today were elderly people aged over 60 years.

Two of them belonged to Srinagar district which has been worst affected by the COVID19 fatalities. An 87 year old from Eidgah Srinagar died at SMHS Hospital today. A 75 year old also lost life at the same hospital. He belonged to HMT area and was known to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was admitted with bilateral pneumonia, a senior doctor at the hospital said.

Other deaths that took place at this hospital included a 70 year old from Mazhama Budgam, a 65 year old from Sumbal Bandipora and a 70 year old from Mughalpora Kupwara.

In Kashmir 5704 people are undergoing treatment and quarantine. 22850 people have recovered from the infection, 358 of them today.

Srinagar district has the highest number of active cases – 1511 as on Tuesday. Among the positive cases in Kashmir, 95 were from Srinagar, 14 Baramulla, Pulwama 36, Budgam 17, Anantnag 26, Bandipora 28, Kupwara 23, Kulgam 9, Shopian 2 and Ganderbal 34.

Barring Kulgam and Shopian, all districts in Kashmir division have been reporting a consistently high number of cases.
