7 prisoners set free in Kupwara

In order to prevent overcrowding in jails amid coronavirus crisis, the state administration released seven prisoners in Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Tuesday.

An official said the decision to free them was taken afterdue approval by the high powered committee set up on the directions of theSupreme Court.

   

“All the released persons are low level prisoners and havenot committed any serious crime. None of them is a political prisoner” saidShari Ram Ambarkar, Senior Superintendent of Police Kupwara.

In the wake of spread of Covid-19, the Supreme Court hadearlier directed all the state and union territories to set up committees toconsider release of jail inmates on parole or interim bail in cases wheremaximum punishment is seven years.
