In order to prevent overcrowding in jails amid coronavirus crisis, the state administration released seven prisoners in Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Tuesday.
An official said the decision to free them was taken after due approval by the high powered committee set up on the directions of the Supreme Court.
“All the released persons are low level prisoners and have not committed any serious crime. None of them is a political prisoner” said Shari Ram Ambarkar, Senior Superintendent of Police Kupwara.
In the wake of spread of Covid-19, the Supreme Court had earlier directed all the state and union territories to set up committees to consider release of jail inmates on parole or interim bail in cases where maximum punishment is seven years.
