Anantnag jail detainee tests positive

The Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag will be testing all the jail inmates and staff members of district jail Anantnag after a detainee tested positive for Covid19.

A Public Safety Act (PSA) detainee, Zahoor Ahmad Bhat of Trehgam Kupwara, serving imprisonment since March this year in this jail located in Mattan area, had complained of fever and chills.

An official said that he was taken to GMC Anantnag hospital on Friday where he was given treatment. Later, his samples were also collected and he was sent back to the jail.

“However, as Bhat’s sample returned positive, he was again shifted to the hospital the same day,” the official said.

Principal GMC Anantnag Dr Showkat Jeelani said the inmate is undergoing treatment in the isolation ward of the hospital.

“We were informed by the jail authorities that there are around 180 detainees lodged in the jail and we will be testing all of them,” the Principal said. He said all the staff members – policemen, mess staff and others will also be tested.

“Today we took samples of around 100 people who were in contact with the inmate and their report is expected by tomorrow or day after,” the Principal said.
