Army to vacate Kargil Lower Plateau

An MoU was signed between the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil and the Army on Friday to vacate the Kargil Lower Plateau.

The plateau, also called Khurbathang Plateau of Kargil, is located in the main town which the army has been using for different operational and logistic needs for several decades now.

   

As per the MoU, substitute land shall be provided to the Army near Maratha Unit Kurbathang and Mulbekh area by the administration.

Official sources said that the MoU was signed between the Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Baseer ul Haq Choudhary, and the Brigade Commander, 121 Infantry Division, Brigadier Vivek Bakshi. The MoU was signed in the presence of the chairman and chief executive councillor, LAHDC, Kargil, Feroz Ahmad Khan and the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Mountain Division, Major General Praveen Kumar Airy.

The MoU also outlines that the Army shall complete the process of evacuation in six months.

Deputy Commissioner Kargil Baseer ul haq Chaudhary told the Greater Kashmir that the evacuated land will be used for infrastructure development.

Chief Executive Councillor LAHDC Kargil, Feroz Ahmed Khan, said that it is a landmark decision which was a long pending demand of the people of Kargil and will pave way for the establishment of a new and well planned township in Kargil with all modern amenities under Smart City Project.

He said people needed this land for expansion of township and previous governments had been taking up the issue with the army.

Social activist Sajad Hussain Kargili said that this is a welcome decision.

MP Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, described it as a historic development.
