Bird flu detected in Bandipora, Shopian

SK Payeen village along Wular Lake in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district has been declared as an infected zone after samples from dead domestic goose returned positive for avian influenza (H5N8), commonly known as bird flu.

“The samples of a few dead suspected birds had been taken from which one sample returned positive for bird flu”, Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Owais Ahmad said.

Meanwhile, the authorities on Monday imposed restrictions in Wadipora village of south Kashmir’s Shopian district after a dead crow’s sample taken from the area was tested positive for avian flu.

Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Dr Ishrat said the department had taken the samples of dead crows a couple of weeks ago from Wadipoar village in Chitragam tehsil, which turned out to be positive for H5N8.
