COVID19 | 24 deaths, 1036 cases in 24 hours

One person died of COVID19 in J&K every hour in the past 24 hours, the death toll escalating to 1038; while a slight drop in new cases was recorded with 1036 testing positive, the total tally of cases reached 65026.

On Monday J&K witnessed a record number of casualties due to the respiratory virus. Incidentally, the highest number of recoveries was also recorded today.

   

Between Sunday and Monday evening, 24 people were reported to have died due to COVID19. Jammu division had 14 casualties and Kashmir 10.

Three people who succumbed to the viral disease today, out of the 10 reported from Kashmir, were less than 50 years of age. Six casualties were reported from Srinagar district.

These include a 37 year old CRPF man admitted at SKIMS Soura. The patient was brought to the hospital with COVID19 pneumonia on 17 September, a doctor working at the hospital said. He said the patient was very sick and obese. “Obesity is a risk factor and can lead to complications in this viral disease,” he said.

Another young person, a 35 year old female from Rainawari Srinagar died today at SKIMS. She too was admitted with bilateral pneumonia, a SKIMS doctor said. He added that the patient did not have any underlying disease.

A 45 year old male from Lawaypora Srinagar died at SMHS hospital today. He too was not reported to be suffering from any other disease but COVID19.

Two other people who passed away at SMHS Hospital between Sunday and Monday were: a 65 year old male from Uri Baramulla admitted with bilateral pneumonia and an 85 year old female from Lasjan Budgam.

At SKIMS, a 55 year old female from Larkipora Annatnag, a 75 year old male from Chanapora Srinagar and a 65 year old female from Nehru Park Srinagar passed away. All the three had COVID19 pneumonia as the cause of admission, a doctor at the hospital said. A 62 year old male from Marhama Anantnag who was diabetic also fell to the viral infection at SKIMS.

A 67 year old male from Amdakadal Srinagar admitted at Chest Diseases Hospital lost life today, a health official said.

In Jammu division, the casualties included 4 from Rajouri, 2 from Doda, 2 from Samba, 1 from Poonch, and 1 from Reasi. Till date 138 deaths have been attributed to COVID19 in Jammu division.

Meanwhile, 18635 COVID19 tests were carried out in J&K, information bulletin issued by J&K Government reveals. Out of these, 5.5 percent tested positive – 1036 samples. The cumulative number of cases breached the 65000 mark and reached 65026.

Monday’s new case count was the lowest in the past two weeks, since 07 September. During the past 14 days, the COVID19 tally has ranged between 1229 and 1698. A health official said the drop in new cases was due to a slight drop in testing. “We have been testing around 25000 samples a day from the past week and that was responsible for the high number of cases,” he said adding that the drop in positives today was a reflection of the decrease in testing.

J&K recorded its highest single day recovery number today when 1158 people were declared as recovered from the infection. The recoveries summed up to 42115.

In Kashmir division, 473 new cases were confirmed today. The highest number of cases were reported from Srinagar – 141 today raising the active cases to 2049. The positive cases from other districts today were: Budgam 60, Baramulla 79, Pulwama 54, Anantnag 36, Bandipora 22, Kupwara 14, Ganderbal 56, Kulgam 5, Shopian 6.

In Jammu division, 536 cases were reported today. 245 of these were from district Jammu.

A total of 74 travelers tested positive in J&K today.
